Welcome to the ultimate treehouse holiday home with altitude.

We’re excited to be welcoming you and your family and friends as our guests to Crane Lodge!

The following welcome kit outlines some of the info you’ll need to know before you arrive, and will get you in the mood for what to expect once you’ve checked in. Make the most of your stay with a combination of active experiences, adventuring or surrender to the pleasures of pure relaxation and indulgence.

Arrival Information

  • Lauren will meet you at the house to welcome you and provide an arrival orientation briefing. Lauren's mobile number is 0408 027 539. When you pass the Shell at Avalon Beach, please give her a call, and she’ll come down to meet you in the street.

Crane Lodge is on a private road off Crane Lodge Place. You'll ascend a very steeply inclined two-way street until you reach a cul de sac with letterboxes at the top. Beyond this is marked a "Private Road", where no. 10 is located.

Drive up the private road and take the right branch of the fork.

“Crane Lodge” is written on a sandstone wall on the first house you’ll see. It’s at number 10, which is marked on the side of our charcoal double garage.

Pull up on the kerb underneath the sandstone wall, keeping the asphalt road clear for neighbours to pass alongside you. Unload your bags and bring up the stairs onto the inclinator lift station – being an unusual property we don’t have a doorbell – but Lauren will come down to meet you and open the garage once you’ve called on approach.

Our inclinator lift carries up to 2 adults plus luggage (250kg weight limit) to the main building at the very top of the property. The lift is open air, and we do have umbrellas to cover you on ascent.

NB the timing of your arrival is paramount to your check-in running smoothly. If you are running late and do not advise Lauren, there will be a charge of $25.00 + GST per half hour, after the pre-arranged meeting time.

  • Seaplanes are available from Rose Bay to Palm Beach by prior arrangement.

Your seaplane pilot will automatically liaise with our team, so a car transfer will be waiting for you to take you from the terminal to Crane Lodge.

It’s quite the thrilling arrival! We can’t wait to see your photos.

  • We welcome guests who wish to travel across to Palm Beach from the Central Coast.

Fantasea Cruising operate two routes, one from Ettalong and another from Wagstaffe. The former takes 25 mins, and latter 20 mins.

Bicycles are also permitted on board.

    Timetables are available at https://palmbeachferries.com.au/timetables/

Please contact us ahead of time for special check-in arrangements, including car transfers from the wharf to Crane Lodge.

  • We welcome guests who wish to travel on their own boats into Pittwater, and can assist with making casual private berthing arrangements at local marinas.

Art & design at Crane Lodge

  • Artworks commissioned for the property include “The Insistence of Nature” driftwood artwork by Shona Wilson in the stairwell. The spiny bodies of the wood invite the viewer to consider the relationship between the spaces we inhabit and the primacy of the natural world beyond, which in Crane Lodge’s case is the power of the ancient Sandstone bedrock that supports the Barrenjoey Peninsula. Despite millions of years of erosion since its formation back in the time of the dinosaurs, the elements never wear it down.

“Offerings” by Shona Wilson is a series representing the artist’s personal gesture of gratitude to nature for the ‘gifted’ bounty of materials which she views as repositories of information, stories and knowledge. ‘Offerings’ no. 6 and no. 8 are found in the main Lodge stairwell and studio.

“Seed Rain” luminaire suspended above the Agostino & Brown custom ‘Tambootie’ table and Mattiazzi ‘Osso’ dining chairs is a collaboration between industrial designer Celina Clarke and Shona Wilson. The light fitting/art installation literally brings the outdoors in with seeds endemic to the surrounding bushland sealed inside dozens of tiny test tubes. It’s an invitation to contemplate how nature can be preserved for future generations.

“Overgrown” tapestry by Julie Patterson, one of Australia’s best known contemporary textile designers, in the master bedroom. Through her company Cloth Fabric, Julie creates iconic designs inspired by the Australian landscape, using traditional hand-printed flatbed fabric production. During a residency at Crane Lodge in 2019, just before the Black Summer bushfires, Julie created watercolour sketches which formed the basis for Overgrown. She developed the piece in her studio in the Blue Mountains at Blackheath, which was lucky to survive the bushfires, and as the bush recovered, Julie was inspired by the resilience of nature.

  • The Lodge’s interiors are the work of award-winning interior designer Carole Whiting. After Kim sent Carole a rock from the surrounding garden, Carole curated a colour palette and textures which hero the natural surrounds. Kim wanted Crane Lodge to offer an environment where guests could experience nature in a relaxed environment with clever design. In a metaphor for taking the edge of things, the benches, table tops and other edges are softened and curved, while the light-filled interiors make guests feel immersed in nature and convey a sense of calm and serenity.

  • Designed by award-winning landscapers Secret Gardens, Crane Lodge’s 1800sqm garden has been completely replanted to help protect the property’s 22 endangered Pittwater spotted gums and features an array of natives endemic to the area, including lilly pilly and lemon myrtle.

The lush front garden offers a restorative ‘forest bathing’ experience. Known as ‘shinrin-yoku’ in Japan, research has proven that spending time in nature is calming, restorative, and lowers cortisol and stress.
